Chronic Pain: What If Your Body Isn’t Broken?
What if your chronic pain isn't proof that your body is broken?
What if your body has actually been doing what it was designed to do: protect you?
When you've lived with chronic pain for months or years, it's easy to believe something has gone wrong inside you. You've tried medications, diets, supplements, treatments, and countless other approaches. Maybe you've had some relief, but you're still wondering, What am I missing?
I know that feeling.
When I developed widespread pain and inflammation, I approached my body like an engineer approaches a problem. I wanted to find what was broken and fix it.
But eventually, I discovered a missing piece that changed how I understood chronic pain:
My body wasn't broken. My nervous system was protecting me.
Chronic Pain May Be a Protective Response
We often think of pain as a simple warning: something is wrong, so it hurts.
But pain is more complex than that.
Your brain is constantly interpreting information from your body and environment. When your nervous system senses danger, it activates protection.
That's helpful when you're facing an immediate threat.
But when stress continues, the nervous system can remain in a state of protection. Fear, stress, and repeated thought patterns can reinforce the pain cycle.
This doesn't mean your chronic pain isn't real.
It means there may be more to your pain experience than what's happening in your physical body.
And that's hopeful.
Because your nervous system can learn new patterns, too.
How to Start Calming Your Nervous System
If you're living with chronic pain, one place to begin is by helping your nervous system experience more safety.
Try this simple practice today:
- Pause. When you notice pain, stop and take a slow breath.
- Notice. Ask yourself, What was happening right before my pain increased?
- Get curious. Notice any thoughts, emotions, stress, or fear that showed up.
- Reassure yourself. Place a hand over your heart and say, “I am safe in this moment. My body is doing its best to protect me.”
You aren't trying to force the pain away.
You're practicing a new response.
Nervous system regulation works through consistent repetition, helping the brain learn new patterns of safety rather than continuing to reinforce fear and protection.
Small practices, repeated regularly, can become powerful healing habits.
You Are Not Broken
If you've been living with chronic pain, I want you to remember this:
You are not broken.
Your body isn't your enemy.
You didn't choose your pain, but you can choose your path forward.
Becoming pain-free isn't about finding one magic solution. It's about creating the conditions that support your body's natural ability to heal through intentional, consistent changes in your thoughts, behaviors, and daily habits.
Start with curiosity instead of judgment.
Start with safety instead of fear.
Start with one small nervous system practice today.
You don't have to do everything perfectly.
You simply have to begin.
